English version

Call of the Deep Ones is a tabletop RPG with minimalist rules which emule the famous game “Call of Cthulhu”, based on the short stories and novels written by the American author Howard Phillips Lovecraft as Dagon, Cats of Ulthar, Nyarlathotep and the Call of Cthulhu itself which gave the name to the cosmic horror mythology: the Cthulhu Mythos.

In this game, players get the role of investigators in search of dark mysteries, weird events and prophetic dreams, but under the veil of reality lies the indescribable answers which should stay hidden.

Take your lantern, adjust your Fedora hat and do not read that book which attracts you, hidden between the stuff which belonged to your grandfather… that, my friend, is the Call of the Deep Ones.

Hey this is a great game!  I am so pleased to see an English language edition.  I have a question: the skills section does not list detection skills such as spot hidden, perception, listen, etc.  Is this an intentional omission?  If so, how to player-characters detect hidden or obscure clues?  Does the Hierophant just give them those clues by fiat?  Also wondering: do Hit Points and Sanity Points recover?

Hi Mograg, I’m really happy that you liked the game. About the Skills, unfortunately I did not include them because during my playtests I noticed that they weren’t necessary, at least for my players. I prefer a narrative way of detecting clues, and you could use a Mental check or even include those Skills, if you want to. About Health and Sanity Points, that was a mistake of mine. As I normally DM one-shots, I did not create rules for recovering, but I could include them in a future version of the game. While I don’t, I would consider that a character can recover 1d6 Health Points per week of rest, and 1d6 Sanity Points per week of therapy.

Apparently, 3 years ago, a translation was in progress. Any news on that, perhaps? That would certainly generate more interest in this project. I guess it could be done by machine translation as well. Online tools like DeepL are producing quite decent results, and any errors could be corrected manually.

Hello, Sorgur! I started translating it, but I had some problems and stopped the translation. With your comment, I’m motivated to keep translating! Thanks for the interest in Chamado dos Abissais!

Neat! In fact, I just tried to translate some parts of it (using DeepL and Yandex), and the results appeared to be pretty decent and comprehensible. However, a proper translation would definitely require some actual supervision from the original creator. Well, thanks in advance, and best of Luck!

I just published the english version today. I hope you like it!

Wow, thanks a lot! I really hope it’ll get more attention with this translation.

Hello!  While I eagerly await the English version, I put the Portuguese version through Google Translate so I could give the game a read.  Some observations:

There do not appear to be any rules for healing from physical injuries or recovering lost sanity points.

The ever-popular 'Spot Hidden' skill does not appear to be present.

There is no rule for how to engage in an opposed skill contest (for example: my investigator tries to notice the cultist sneaking up behind him, or my investigator tries to dodge the swing of a cultist's machete blow).

These are just some observations as I read the document.  I am looking forward to the English version!

Cheers and best,

Brian C.
